Three (3) bottles 2024 Fighting Gully Road Chardonnay, Beechworth | RRP $55 per bottle
"Twelve months in 300L French Tronçais barrels followed by three months on lees in tank before bottling. Chardonnay, the undoubted strength of Beechworth, was one of the first fruits picked in the '24 vintage at FGR, retaining sensational, energised acidity while keeping a pretty tight flavour profile. Spring blossom aromatics mingle with tangy citrus and white peach, grilled nuts and almond nougat with a peach custard-like texture. Clean as a whistle and bright; it moves in a linear line of brisk acidity, going long and dispensing some tart grapefruit pithiness on the finish. It's early days for this little beauty." 95 points from Jeni Port for Halliday Wine Companion.
“The 2024 vintage was a much more pleasurable experience than the 2003 which was ‘the year without a summer'”, says Mark Walpole. Here’s a Chardonnay with plenty of flavour, though it also keeps itself tight and tidy. Peach, pink grapefruit, cedar, spice, a vanilla creaminess and honey florals, aniseed, with a minor amount of struck match. There’s a juiciness to the wine, balanced acidity, a light chalky texture, an oatmeal savoury element, with a flavoursome finish of excellent length. Such a lovely wine to drink." 94+ points from Gary Walsh for The Wine Front.
Three (3) bottles 2023 Fighting Gully Road Smith Vineyard Chardonnay, Beechworth | RRP $95 per bottle
"A scintillating chardonnay purity on show here from a vintage that goes down as one of Beechworth's coldest growing seasons and vintages. It fairly crackles in racy acidity and tangy acid drive. Up to the challenge is a fruit profile that adds flesh and character with a world of citrus explored – citrus blossom florals, Meyer lemon, grapefruit, lime zest – with quince, white peach and Asian pear. Built on a fine-etched, sherbet-like acidity, it finishes on a high with a lasting flinty kick." 95 points from Jeni Port for Halliday Wine Companion.
Two (2) bottles 2022 Fighting Gully Road Block 02 Sangiovese, Beechworth | RRP $70 per bottle
"Crushed, macerated on skins in large format oak, 18 months' maturation in new and seasoned oak. Built for longevity, not speed, Block 02 is a viticulturist's dream come true, a block planted according to a firm clonal selection protocol. It's one serious sangiovese, still evolving, still very much a taut, precision-driven engine yet to reveal all. Looks to dark cherries, plum, fennel, earth, tobacco, thyme and cured meats framed in savoury tannins and wood-spiced oak. Leaves you wondering and wanting more." 96 points from Jeni Port for Halliday Wine Companion.
"Floral and red-fruit focused, with aromas of cherries, mocha and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with finely integrated tannins and bright acidity, giving notes of red currants, tobacco leaves and wet stones. Very well balanced and focused, with an underlying tension. Drink or hold." 95 points from Ryan Montgomery for James Suckling.
Three (3) bottles 2024 Fighting Gully Road Sangiovese, Beechworth | RRP $38 per bottle
"Mark Walpole loves sangiovese and the feeling is reciprocated. This is a mighty strong follow-up to the '23, fairly bristling in cherry-fruited and aromatic brightness and crunch in youth, with an underlying brooding quality that says, 'just wait.' A smidge (5%) of the Tuscan colorino red grape adds to the iridescence of the cherry red, bright hues. Aromas rise in wild raspberries, red cherries, plum, florals, cumin, fennel seed, red earth and spice. The palate is nicely weighted, with brisk acid crunch, and is both upbeat and alive in spiced cherry, red fruits and an underlying savouriness of Campari, dried herbs, licorice and mineral earthiness. Potential? You bet!" 96 points from Jeni Port for Halliday Wine Companion.
One (1) bottle 2024 Verdicchio, Beechworth | RRP $40 per bottle
"This is aged in a large seasoned oval cask lying on its side for greater lees contact. Green apple, lemon peel, herbs and fennel, honeyed florals, and a dusting of cinnamon, or something of that ilk, though it doesn’t really matter because it’s mainly about gentle gloss with chalky texture, a ripe lemon and peel tang lending a gustatory bitterness, and a bright and flavoursome finish of some salinity and excellent length. Tasty." 93 points from Gary Walsh for The Wine Front.
