If you’re searching for wines that consistently over-deliver, look no further than our sangiovese! We have just (again) been named one in Halliday Wine Companion’s Top 100 Wines of the year. Drilling into the Top 100, we’ve been included in the Top 20 Australian red wines under $50 — among a standout selection, the Halliday Tasting Team have curated this years list following James Halliday’s retirement in 2024. This isn’t just a one-hit wonder…our sangiovese (2022) was also named in the Top 100, and we are over the moon with this years inclusion.
Looking quickly back to August where at the 2026 Halliday Wine Companion Awards Fighting Gully Road was also once again, recognised as a Top Rated Winery, earning the highly respected five red-red star rating — a title reserved for producers with a track record of 10 years or more of consistently outstanding wine quality. It’s one of the most prestigious accolades a winery can receive in Australia, and it speaks volumes about the dedication of our team.
So what makes the 2024 Sangiovese so special? Our viticulturist and winemaker Mark Walpole has long had a deep affinity for this classic Italian variety, and it shows. The wine bursts with vibrant red cherry, wild raspberry, and plum, lifted by florals and exotic spice. A touch of Colorino, a traditional Tuscan blending grape, adds brightness and depth. It’s lively and fresh on the palate, with brisk acidity, layers of spice, and an earthy savouriness that keeps you coming back for more. At just $38, it’s an exceptional wine that drinks beautifully now and will reward cellaring through to 2033.
Whether you’re a long-time fan of Australian wine or just beginning your journey, choosing a wine from Halliday’s Top 100 means you’re on to a winner – for sure. Here’s what Halliday taster Jeni Port had to say about the 2024 Fighting Gully Road Sangiovese:
Mark Walpole loves sangiovese and the feeling is reciprocated. This is a mighty strong follow-up to the ’23, fairly bristling in cherry-fruited and aromatic brightness and crunch in youth, with an underlying brooding quality that says, ‘just wait.’ A smidge (5%) of the Tuscan colorino red grape adds to the iridescence of the cherry red, bright hues. Aromas rise in wild raspberries, red cherries, plum, florals, cumin, fennel seed, red earth and spice. The palate is nicely weighted, with brisk acid crunch, and is both upbeat and alive in spiced cherry, red fruits and an underlying savouriness of Campari, dried herbs, licorice and mineral earthiness. Potential? You bet!”

Cheers!
