— With thanks to The Real Review (TRR).
I’ve always believed that the best recognition in this game comes quietly — in the vineyard, over time, through the wines themselves. So to see our 2023 Smith Vineyard Chardonnay nominated for White Wine of the Year in The Real Review‘s Top Wineries Awards 2026 is something I’m incredibly proud of.
Up here in Beechworth, we’ve never set out to chase accolades. The focus has always been on the land — farming thoughtfully, working with what each season gives us, and trying to capture something honest in the bottle. I’ve been leasing this vineyard since 2009 — nearly a third of its life — and in a region defined by history, it remains one of the oldest plantings here. That kind of continuity shapes how you see things. It asks for patience, and a long view.
To have a wine recognised at this level — not just within its category, but as one of the leading white wines in the country this year — feels significant. It’s a reflection of the site, the season, and the quiet, consistent work that goes into each bottle. This kind of recognition speaks beyond a single release. It’s tied to years of effort, and to the people who’ve supported what we do along the way.
TRR’s 2026 Top Winery Award Finalists will begin rolling out from April 20, with the FGR feature being presented on April 22. Like everyone else, I’ll be watching with interest as it all unfolds in the weeks that follow.
Whatever the final result, this is a moment I’m taking the time to appreciate. It means a great deal.
— Mark.
