2019 La Longa Sangiovese, Beechworth

Product Details

The 2019 La Longa Sangiovese is a testament to patience. We have explored a series of names that pay tribute to the 36-month process of aging the wine, inspired by the Italian terms used in music.

The wine has great depth structure, and complexity, while retaining an elegant, medium-bodied palate with lingering fine-grained tannins. Brambly dark berries, sour cherry and plum with nuances of dried herb on the nose.

Wine review

Brunello clones here, and quite a contrast to the block O2 Sangiovese, not least given three years of bottle age between release. I must say, Sangiovese is, to me, one of the less interesting Italian red grapes. I prefer, in no particular order, Nebbiolo, Nerello Mascalese, Pelaverga, Freisa, Aglianico, Frappato etc. over it. That’s just me though. I’m likely an outlier. Also, Barbera is not something I usually like either.

This is nutty and a little minty, red cherry and tobacco, some dried herbs, and yes, it certainly has that mature almost walnut character of Brunello, with a coverlet of spicy cedar oak. It’s medium-bodied, a pleasing nutty and autumnal cast to it, some blood orange juiciness to acidity, ripe gently grainy tannin, with a slightly sappy/herbal/orange peel finish of good length. It’s a good wine. What it lacks in freshness, it makes up for with complexity - 93 points."

Good domestic sangiovese with considerable ambition. Edgy tannins and frisky acidity, the structural hallmarks of variety, are set into relief against some classy oak. Scents of bing cherry, anise, dried thyme and bracken, with oak-derived maltiness embedded into the mid-weighted fray. Drink or hold, as this should age very well. Screw cap - 93 points."
- Ned Goodwin MW for James Suckling.
"Fragrant aromas of nutty oak, bramble, menthol, leather, earth, dried herbs and dark fruits. Firm, sinewy and fleshy on the palate. Flavours are in the cherry, redcurrant, ferrous earth and woodsy zone. The tannins are firm, textured and savoury and the length is smart - 93 points."
- Aaron Brasher for The Real Review.
