An evening of wine, food and the stories behind the vines.
Some of the best wine conversations happen around a table, over generous food, good company and a bottle with a story to tell. This September, Mark Walpole will join four fellow Australian vignerons for the inaugural The Viticulturists’ Table. An intimate evening at Mayfair Lane Pub & Dining Room in West Perth.
Taking place on Wednesday, 9 September from 6pm–9pm, the dinner brings together five viticulturists’ from five very different corners of Australian wine:
Lee Haselgrove — Lirica / Mr Barval, Margaret River, Western Australia
Mark Walpole — Fighting Gully Road, Beechworth, Victoria
Tim Brown — De La Beche, Macedon Ranges, Victoria
Ashley Ratcliff — Ricca Terra, Riverland, South Australia
Dr Dylan Grigg — Vinya Vella, Barossa Valley, South Australia.
Together, they will present ten deeply personal wines, sharing the stories, philosophies and places behind them. For Mark, the evening is an opportunity to bring the wines of Beechworth and North East Victoria to a Perth audience, and to talk about the vineyards, varieties and viticultural decisions that have shaped Fighting Gully Road over more than three decades.
Mark has long been fascinated by the relationship between variety and place. At Fighting Gully Road, that has led to a diverse collection of vineyards and varieties, from the historic Smith Vineyard Chardonnay to Sangiovese and other Italian varieties that have found an increasingly natural home in the cool, elevated conditions of Beechworth.
What makes this dinner particularly appealing is its intimacy. There will be just 24 guests seated around one shared table, creating an opportunity to hear directly from the growers rather than simply tasting their wines across a crowded room. The evening includes a seasonal multi-course menu from Mayfair Lane, with ten wines presented by each vigneron.
