2020 Fighting Gully Road Rosé, Riverland
Crisp and fresh acidity are the hallmarks of a rosé made from Mouvedre grapes. Barrel fermented and aged on lees, this savoury and flavoursome wine has texture, but is completely dry.
Palate: dry, savoury and textural with refreshing acidity on the finish of the palate
Bouquet: enticing aromas of sour cherry; baked strawberry and cream
The Vintage: The 2020 vintage was a non-event in Beechworth due to bushfire smoke tainting nearly all the grapes. In search of sound fruit I ended up in the town of Renmark in the Riverland where I was able to source Mouvedre. After a marathon trip in a small truck we had the grapes back at the winery.
The Vinification: Mouvedre grapes were destemmed and crushed then left on skins for a short period to extract further flavour and a small amount of colour. Settled juice was transferred to barrels where fermentation took place using indigenous yeasts. The wine remained on lees for 6 months prior to bottling.
The Inspiration: This wine was inspired by the styles produced in the Bandol region in southern France. Made in a bone-dry style, the resultant wines like this one being an attractive bright salmon colour.
