Product Details

The palate structure demonstrates the varietal difference between Tempranillo and other red varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. Firm, fine grained powdery tannins coat the mouth, with rich black fruits. Released as a four year old wine, it demonstrates many of the characteristics seen in the Tempranillo wines of Spains Rioja Alta and Ribera del Duero.

Palate: medium bodied, with classical firm but fine powdery tannins

Bouquet: fragrant aroma's of cherry-cola, blackberry and plum

The Vintage: The season leading up to the 2016 vintage was one of extremes, with very cool conditions in the month of November, with severe frost affecting parts of the vineyard on November 27th. Fortunately, the Tempranillo was unaffected. January's temperatures were warm without being excessive and in February leading up to harvest we recorded two days of 35 degrees. Two weeks of hot weather were experienced in March (not exceeding 35degrees), but this was after Tempranillo was harvested.

Rain fell at regular intervals throughout the season without being excessive, reducing stress on the vines.

The Vinification: Grapes were destemmed and crushed retaining a portion of whole berries. The wine was fermented in small stainless-steel vats with an extended maceration post-fermentation for 18 days.

The Inspiration: Tempranillo is the fundamental building blocks for Spain's greatest red wines from La Rioja and Ribera del Duero. While many examples historically were aged in American oak hogsheads, the more modern examples are using French oak from the forests of Never. This wine uses no American oak. Like Ribera's Vega Sicilia we have chosen to release the vintage at is best drinking window, which has meant prior to that of the 2015.

Grape Variety: 100% Tempranillo

Oak Maturation: 50% new Italian coopered French oak barriques for 18 months, predominately of the forest of Never. Balance older French barriques.
